This article describes the problems of verbal-nominal homonymy on the material of the English language. A special place in the system of homonymy of the language is occupied by verb-nominal homonymy. The problem of the relationship between the name and the verb in languages has always been of interest of scientists, since it is most directly related to the problems of language ontology. The non-simple and ambiguous nature of this phenomenon makes it possible to attribute the verbal-nominal homonymy of the root-bases to one of the significant and essential problems of historical linguistics. In this regard, the theoretical foundations of the development of Indo-European languages, in particular the English language, are considered, moreover studies of various linguists are given. On the example of monosyllabic words, which are the object of research, this phenomenon can be studied especially well, since the roots of the words are the base that determines the relationship of a given word to a particular part of speech. The analysis of examples of monosyllabic roots of the stems is given, the history of the development of these words is considered, and the points of view of scientists in linguistics about the primacy of the name and the secondary nature of the verb on the material of languages of different systems are given. Further, the article describes examples of verbal-nominal homonymy as a way of word formation in the English language and also raises the question of considering this issue in Indo-European researches, where this problem was practically not studied.
