Abstract

The article is devoted to the origin, stages of development and classification of the theory of values. The representation of national values is presented on the basis of the work of Kazakh poet-lyricist Mukhtar Shakhanov.

The paper considers both foreign and domestic scientists' works written in this direction – monographs and articles. The paper highlights how the theory of values, having started from philosophy, developed into an independent science of axiology and established interdisciplinary links with linguistics. In the linguistic aspect, national values are considered in accordance with the classification of B.S. Erasov, who divides them into categories: vital; social; political; moral; religious; aesthetic. The article emphasises that depending on the life orientations, mentality and educational peculiarities of representatives of different ethnic groups, the system of values may differ significantly.

The aim of the study is to argue that for the representatives of the Kazakh people the value ‘ar’ (honour, conscience) is at the heart of the whole system of values, and to prove it through the representation of associative fields of the concept ‘ar’ in the poetic lines of M. Shakhanov.

As a result of the study, the authors conclude that the national values of the Kazakh people are embodied in the triad “mal – zhan – ar” (livestock/wealth – soul – honor). According to the above classification, mal belongs to the social category, zhan to the life (vital) category, and ar to the moral category. The study demonstrates that these values in the works of M. Shakhanov are represented through lexical and grammatical units as well as syntactic constructions.

The scientific significance of the study lies in the fact that the conclusions of the article contribute to a deeper understanding of such scientific areas as axiology, cognitive science and linguocultural studies. The theoretical results of the study contribute to the comprehension of the relationship between language and thinking, language and speech, as well as to the understanding of the role of national values.
