Abstract

Universal concepts reflect the philosophical, national-cultural, and psychological aspects of a given ethnic group’s consciousness, which are manifested through linguistic means. Linguistic cognition, as a new branch of linguistics, studies these aspects using idioms, short folklore genres, and works of fiction. The aim of this study is to identify the specific features of the concept of “time” in the Kazakh linguistic worldview, as presented in S. Zhunusov’s novella “Zamanay men Amanay.” The authors employed various research methods: classification of semantic models, cultural-historical and descriptive methods, and the method of interdisciplinary synthesis. The article highlights the denotative and connotative nuances of the “time” concept. Of particular interest is the ethno-marked lexeme “zaman,” which possesses vivid connotative nuances in the literary work. The authors provide a classification of semantic models of the “time” concept in the novel and identify S. Zhunusov’s individual authorial vision of the concept. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the systematic study of the concept of “time” in the work and its inclusion in the broader framework of linguo-cognitive studies of the mental unit, demonstrating the national-cultural code of the Kazakhs, shaped by the various circumstances of their existence. The theoretical significance of the work lies in the elaboration of the theory of the concept of “time,” which can serve as a basis for subsequent research on universal concepts. The practical significance lies in the applicability of the article’s main provisions to the teaching of a range of disciplines, including linguistics, ethnolinguistics, sociolinguistics, the Kazakh language, the history of Kazakhstan, philosophy, political science, cultural studies, and others. The results of the study of the concept of “time” as one of the universals of Kazakh existence and consciousness contribute to the study of the Kazakh conceptual sphere.
