Abstract

The article examines the features of newspaper discourse on the internet, identifies its differences from print newspapers, and explores some semantic oppositions in online newspaper discourse. Examples taken from internet newspaper discourse are considered. To study the semantic oppositions in online newspaper discourse, a preliminary small-scale study was conducted to understand how online newspapers differ from print newspapers. Accordingly, the aim of our work is to determine the characteristics of online newspaper discourse. The following results were identified in accordance with the research objectives:

- There are a number of similarities between online newspaper discourse and print newspaper discourse: targeting a specific audience, maintaining a certain distance between the addressee and the addresser, adherence to rules, the presence of an evaluative function, and ensuring information security, among others.

- There are also a number of differences between the two discourses being examined: the prevalence of censorship in print newspapers versus its rarity in online newspaper discourse, the varying distances between the addressee and the addresser, differences in the scope and speed of impact, and the distinct manifestation of the expressive function in each discourse, among others.

- Semantic oppositions that are frequently encountered in online newspaper discourse serve as a tool for implicit influence on the reader.

To distinguish between print newspaper discourse and online newspaper discourse, comparative analysis methods, semantic analysis, and pragmatic analysis methods were used when examining semantic oppositions.

The scientific novelty of our research lies in the fact that this topic is considered within the time frame of 2012-2022, and semantic oppositions in the language of mass media have not been thoroughly studied. The analysis revealed that semantic oppositions in online newspaper discourse are presented within the scope of speech tactics, certain situations arising from cultural contexts, and specific circumstances. The theoretical significance of the study is the examination of online newspaper discourse within new frameworks, while the practical significance is that the results obtained can be used in the teaching of university subjects such as linguistics, stylistics, and lexicology.
