Abstract

Translation is the process of translating aspects and features of the target text into another language from a semantic, cultural and pragmatic point of view. However, the translation of phraseological and culturally bound phrases has become a challenge for translators because they are culturally bound and contain many cultural elements. The purpose of the scientific article is to study the difficulties encountered in the translation of phraseological units in the novel «Urker»translated from Kazakh to Turkish and the strategies used to solve those difficulties.

Research work consists of three main stages. At the initial stage, the technical definition of the term "phraseological unit" and its significance in the context of translation are considered. The main strategies used by translators in translating Kazakh phraseological units are also analyzed. In the next step, phraseological units from the novel «Urker» are taken as an example and translations in Turkish are analyzed from the viewpoint of the importance of strategy and frequency. As a result of the analysis, four important issues have been identified: 1. From a statistical point of view, the most used strategy is word-for-word translation and using semantic equivalents, followed by word-for-word translation, omission and other translation strategies 2. In case of word-for-word translation some Kazakh phraseological units are preserved in the Turkish vocabulary 3. A number of translations based on literal translation may seem «foreign» or unclear to a Turkish reader. 4. Literal (that is, incorrect) translation is caused by the translator's inability to fully reveal the meaning of the phraseological unit. Finally, the nature of translation strategies, the reasons for their spread, and their impact on the translated text, as well as their impact on the Kazakh and Turkish languages, are reviewed for a deeper understanding.
