Abstract

The purpose of the study of A. Akhmatova's early poem «By the Sea» (1915) is a holistic level-by-level analysis of the theme, plot, composition, idea, as well as the chronotope and color symbolism of the work. Both general scientific (descriptive, hermeneutical, analytical, synthetic) and literary research methods (consideration at the level of subject matter, plot, motive, composition, images, ideas) were used in the work. The central theme of the poem is the theme of being chosen, which is embodied both in the image of the main character and in the plot of the poem itself, which tells about her acquiring a special poetic gift. The expectation of meeting the beautiful prince forms the basis of the plot, in which all the elements of the plot composition can be traced: he beginning, the development of the action, the climax, the denouement. The artistic space includes the topos of Chersonesos, located on the Black Sea coast, and the artistic time covers events that unfold over the course of about one year. In the poem, one can trace the motif of twinhood, embodied in two twin sisters, the origins of which go back to mythological thinking. A whole layer of the biblical intertext connected with the tsarevich's line is also isolated. A few characters, built according to a monocentric system, are devoid of portrait characteristics, but according to the way of the image they are outlined with the help of artistic details, giving a name or highlighting ethnicity. The idea of the work is the tragedy of the fate of the creator, reflected in the image of the heroine. The position is put forward that the dominants highlighted in the poem (poetic selectedness, tragic worldview of life, reliance on Christian values) are characteristic of the entire subsequent work of A.A. Akhmatova. The results of the research can be used in practical courses on Russian literature of the twentieth century.
