Abstract

This article discusses some Kazakh and English anthroponyms, serving as the precedent names. These linguistic phenomena express the value orientations of the linguistic, cultural communities of Kazakhs and Englishmen. They are also woven into their language fund.

The purpose of the article is to determine the role and place of some precedent names in the linguistic consciousness of Kazakhs and Englishmen. The work was carried out in the linguoculturological direction. The authors consider that precedent names are not limited by time and therefore they are conveyed from generation to generation. On the basis of the conducted research, special attention is paid to the property of precedent names that contribute to the regulation of the norms of relations between members of the linguistic society. The article also pays special attention to the cognitive functions that precedent names perform as a symbol, a standard, a stereotype, an association, etc. The authors analyzed the pragmatic potential of precedent names found in the headlines of articles and in advertising texts, noted their role as one of the tools for broadcasting concepts of knowledge accumulated over centuries. The background information around the precedents that have a rich emotional and expressive coloring, which have turned from proper names into common names, has not been left without attention. The system of values around precedent names is also considered. The analysis of linguistic and cultural units differing in evaluative properties corresponding to such scales as good-bad, positive-negative, strong-weak, etc. is carried out. It is noted that in axiological terms, they assess the behavior and actions of people, events of social life. The authors prove that precedent names are an important part of the cognitive base of native speakers.

Comparative-descriptive method was used, cultural codes of implicit information were revealed, and the conclusions made were proved by concrete examples from legends, works of famous poets and writers, etc.

The practical significance of the article is in the fact that the research results can be used in the theoretical courses on cognitive linguistics, linguoculturology, comparative typology, as well as in seminars directly for the practice of teaching English.
