VOCABULARY-GRAMMATICAL DICTIONARY FOR INNOPHONES: FEATURES OF THE TRANSMISSION OF ETHNO-CULTURAL UNITS

Abstract

Language serves as the primary means of communication, as it unites lexical units (words) through grammatical formulas (grammatical categories), allowing speakers to convey their thoughts and intentions. The meanings of words in a language are reflected in lexicographic works such as explanatory dictionaries, synonym dictionaries, and phraseological dictionaries, while their grammatical features are extensively analyzed in grammatical dictionaries, academic grammars, and scientific studies by individual scholars. However, language learners cannot always use these works, written in the native language, as learning tools. This article examines the features of presenting ethnocultural units in a lexico-grammatical dictionary designed for non-native speakers. Ethnocultural units are categorized into groups, and along with the words themselves, definitions that reveal the national code and English translations are provided. The forthcoming lexico-grammatical dictionary will serve as an essential tool for adult non-native speakers who are proficient in English, particularly for master's and doctoral students at the University of Oxford.

The article provides a detailed analysis of the representation of kinship terms in a lexico-grammatical dictionary intended for non-native speakers. Kinship terms are crucial lexical units that reflect the worldview and cultural values of a particular ethnic group. The system of kinship terms in the Kazakh language has a complex hierarchical structure, differing based on age categories, degrees of kinship, and gender factors. These features may pose additional challenges for non-native speakers learning the Kazakh language.

The study explores the semantic field of kinship terms, their scope of use, and their role in intercultural communication. Additionally, it examines the most effective ways to present kinship terms in lexico-grammatical dictionaries for non-native speakers. Specifically, the article discusses issues related to definition formulation, selection of equivalents, use of illustrative materials, and the creation of accessible grammatical explanations.
