PROBLEMS OF WRITING OF PERSON AND PLACE NAMES IN THE CHINESE LANGUAGE ON THE BASIS OF CYRILLIC GRAPHIC

Abstract

The article gives scientifically supported transliteration forms of Chinese onomastic names, particularly anthroponyms (personal names) and toponyms (placenames), that are closer, or as similar as possible to the original, and backs them up with concrete examples. First, a review of the history of the topic under discussion is conducted, followed by an analysis of works in this field, on the basis of which the issue's topicality is substantiated. Recommendations on the accurate lettering of Chinese anthroponyms and toponyms in the Kazakh language is given. First, the author analyses phonetic characteristics of Chinese language and highlights the peculiarities of personal and place names spelling in line with Chinese spelling regulations. Then, on the basis of the work "Dictionary of Kazakh language spelling" published in China regarding the correct spelling of persons and place names borrowed from Chinese language, six rules of spelling of Chinese names of places and people in the Kazakh language are meticulously analysed. In addition, the article discusses how Kazakhs from China use direct writing to write Chinese personal names and place names. Rather than the traditional method of transferring Chinese onomastic names into Kazakh through Russian, effective ways of transferring Chinese place and personal names into Kazakh from the original language using transliteration and taking into account the specifics of the original Chinese and targeted Kazakh languages are presented.
