LINGUOCULTURAL ANALYSIS OF CHINESE TWO-ALLEGORICAL SAYINGS WITH A COMPONENT - A PROPER NAME 猪八戒

Abstract

This article analyzes the use of Chinese two-part allegorical sayings 歇后语 with a proper name component "Zhu Bajie 猪八戒" from Wu Cheng'en's science fiction novel "Journey to the West". In the view of the fact that proper names are a reflection of the picture of the world of the source text, and the names of the four heroes appear to the readers as carriers of the cultural marking of the Chinese people, reflection of the spirit of the nation and the spirit of the Tang era is clearly traced in proper names. While studying  歇后语 (Chinese two-part allegorical sayings) with proper names from the above-mentioned novel, it was revealed that these images have an emotionally expressive coloring, while 歇后语 add zest to the novel; their presence serves as a kind of emotional message for the reader. During our analysis, it was also revealed that Chinese xiehouyu, a specific form of Chinese idioms, is heavily loaded with cultural specificity. The most unusual thing is how the image, veiled in the first part of these two-part allegorical sayings, is revealed. Based on the above analysis, we can conclude that the presence of the Zhu Bajie component in the omissions indicates a high level of frequency of the use of this proper name in speech and popularity among the people. The use of a proper name in Chinese xiehouyu as a hint pushes the reader to understand what exactly was laid down under the image of a half-pig-half-man in the allegory.
