The article presents the results of a study on electronic mail as one mode of computer-mediated communication. The purpose of the study is to determine the nature of email as mode of communication and its linguistic features.
Email remains a stable and reliable means of computer-mediated communication that has been serving people since the 1970s. Compared to instant messaging, chat groups, web blogs, and other modes of electronic communication, email differs in terms of its nature of communication, independent access to time and place, simultaneous feedback, functional purposes, structure, style and language. In addition, email has characteristics similar to and different from traditional written and spoken communication mediums.
The sources of the study are the studies on the topic of electronic communication, including electronic mail. Electronic mails from the work e-mail of the author of the study are used as research data. The research is carried out by methods of comparison, critical analysis and content analysis.
The results of this study have shown that electronic mail differs from other modes of electronic communication in that it is a reliable and permanent tool of communication, adds comfort and freedom to communication, can be sent to multiple recipients at once and reaches them quickly, and features temporality of messages, while its combination of asynchronous and synchronous communication types and a lack of simultaneous feedback nature bring it closer to spoken medium of communication and at the same time distinguish it from it. Email is a mode of communication with its own structure and language features.
The value of this study is to expand the research on the electronic communication in Kazakh, as well as to deepen the understanding and analysis of its research questions.
The practical significance of the results of the work is reflected in understanding the scientific basis of electronic communication, expanding the linguistic knowledge of users of the virtual world, and increasing the number of studies aimed at investigating various aspects of the relationship between the Internet and language.
